Parameters

BODC CODERankUnitsTitle
DEPHPR011MetresDepth (spatial coordinate) relative to water surface in the water body by profiling pressure sensor and conversion to seawater depth using UNESCO algorithm
PSALPR011DimensionlessPractical salinity of the water body by conductivity cell and computation using UNESCO 1983 algorithm

Definition of Rank

  • Rank 1 is a one-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 2 is a two-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 0 is a one-dimensional parameter describing the second dimension of a two-dimensional parameter (e.g. bin depths for moored ADCP data)

Problem Reports

Salinity noise up to 0.02 PSU.

Narrative Documents

Bissett-Bermann 9040 Conductivity Temperature and Depth

The basic configuration of the B-B 9040 CTD incorporates pressure, temperature and conductivity sensors which could be logged digitally. This system also made it possible to derive other parameters, such as salinity, depth and sound velocity.

The instrument was versatile and it was possible to attach a dissolved oxygen sensor or to change the CTD housing, allowing it to obtain data from deeper layers in the water column. The accuracy for salinity is ±0.02 ppt , and ±0.02°C for temperature.

This instrument was also known as the Plessey 9040.

RRS Challenger 16/80 CTD Data Documentation

Introduction

Documentation for the CTD data collected on RRS Challenger Cruise 16/80 (29 August - 9 September 1980) by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, Bidston (now POL).

Port of Departure Liverpool
Port of Return Barry
Area Celtic Sea

Caution

Some of the salinity data collected on this cruise are noisy (±0.02 psu)

Data Processing

The raw data were previously manually edited, resequenced and archived in 2 files. 0ne file contained temperature, salinity and depth frequencies and time elapsed the other contained decca positional infomation.

These data were reprocessed in Febuary 2001.

Calibrations

The following constants (obtained from printouts of the data) were used to convert to real units and calibrate.

Temperature Constant 2128.1
Salinity Constant 5001.3
Depth Constant 9748.7

The downcasts had a temperature correction applied to lessen salinity spiking.

REALT = TC(2) + ((TC(3)-TC(1))/2.0) * TIC

where:

TC(1-3) = Three successive readings of temperature (°C)
TIC = Timing constant of the instrument = 0.35
