Objectives | Objectives
To examine Irish Sea cod at known spawning grounds in February and early March, coinciding with the spawning season. To study their size, age composition and biological characteristics, including maturity, fecundity, condition and diet. Also, to study potential predators of cod eggs (herring, sprat) and to tag and release medium to larger elasmobranchii. Narrative The RV departed from Belfast on 17 Feb at 10:00, then surveyed the Western Irish Sea for 12 days, focusing on the area west of the Isle of Man and towards an area east of the Republic of Ireland (south of Dublin). Weather was calm, except from 22 to 24 Feb, when a moderate gale was experienced. 107 Stations were fished with the Portuguese high-headline trawl and all fish species were recorded, measured, and subsamples weighed, dissected, stomach-sampled, etc. The survey was completed on 2 March, when the RV docked at Belfast at 09:00. |
