PurposeResearch
ObjectivesFollowing the successful use of the long-range side-scan sonar in the Rockall Trough during Cruise 84, it was planned to make a wider study of the continental margin of northwest Europe utilising the technique of producing sonograph mosaics of substantial areas. Simultaneous bathymetric, seismic reflection and gravity measurements would also be made. It was planned to concentrate the main effort of the cruise in the Southwestern Approaches and off Portugal with alternative areas to the south reserved as bad weather options.
