Status | Completed |
Port of departure | Stanley, Falkland Islands (Malvinas) |
Port of return | Punta Arenas, Chile |
Purpose | Research |
Objectives | The two main aims of the cruise were to study ridge crest-trench collisions in the Scotia and Bellingshausen seas and to investigate he controls on Weddell sea sedimentation. The cruise included a study of the three youngest collision zones off the Antarctic Peninsula and a reconnaissance of the youngest collision zone in the contrasting intra-oceanic environment directly south off the South Sandwich arc.
The cruise included the following activities: (1) Geophysical (gravity, magnetics and seismics) surveying in the Bransfield Strait to South Orkney region, including shooting lines in conjunction with HMS Endurance. (2) Measurement of sea-floor heatflow by deployment of in-situ probe, including piston-coring to determine site suitability. (3) Sample collection by rock dredge. (4) Routine XBT drops for IOS. |
