Cruise period1987-06-08 — 1987-06-22
StatusCompleted
Port of departureArdrossan, United Kingdom
Port of returnTromsø, Norway
PurposeResearch
Objectives1. To investigate the distributions of phytoplankton, especially coccolithophorids, and relevant hydrographic properties (temperature, salinity, oxygen, inorganic nutrients, light penetration etc.) in the NE Atlantic Ocean (55-65° N, 01-21° W).
2. To make further measurements of biogenic sulphur compounds in surface oceanic waters and the marine atmosphere.
3. To make a preliminary investigation of the production of particulate organic and inorganic carbon in relation to the CO2 chemistry of surface waters.
4. To collect samples of glacial and post-glacial sediments for studies on sedimentation and geochemical processes.
These were successfully achieved, with only minor losses of operational time due to poor weather and equipment failures.
