Objectives1) West coast fish survey
2) Extra fish pollution samples were taken for Mr Holden of the Fitlochry Laboratory
3) Plankton hauls using a WP3 tow-net were taken for the collection of Euphausiids for the parastiology section. Fish catches were examined for nematode infestation.
4) Duplicate Gulf III samples were taken for plankton at all stations worked. 1 sample was preserved in formalin and the other deep frozen for dry weight estimation. Plankton indicators were towed at all night stations and in addition at some extra stations in the Minch for the Edinburgh Laboratory of IMER

''Explorer'' docked in Greenock on the 12/12/1971 till the 14/12/1971 to change personnel. Continued bad weather forced the ship to anchor in Campbeltown Lock from the 14/12/1971 until the 16/12/1971. Strong winds forced the abandonment of the last station
