PurposeResearch
ObjectivesTo undertake sediment biogeochemistry and benthic faunal studies of two disposal sites (Souter Point and North Tyne) in the Tyne Area. Also to trial a sediment profile imagery (SPI) system for taking sediment pictures in-situ.
Four sites were visited (2 at each disposal site) that represented sites that we impacted and non-impacted by disposal activities. Measurements were made of water column characteristics (DO, salinity, chlorophyl, SPM, nutrients), benthic fauna (infauna by Hamon grabs, and epifauna by beam trawls) plus sediment biogeochemistry (oxygen profiles, nutrient flux, oxygen uptake, pore water profiles, porosity, organic carbon, sediment chlorophyll, adsorbed ammonium) at each site. The sampling has been targetted using acoustic systems to discriminate impacted areas or disposed material.
The SPI system was deployed over 19 stations on the North Tyne disposal ground and was designed to cover various acoustic regions and sites where biogeochemistry work had been done.
