PurposeTrials
Objectives1. Establish procedures for deployment of the large mackerel pelagic trawl PT170.
2. Confirm operating procedures for deployment of the PT160 that avoid damage to net when used with netsonde cable.
3. Investigate high frequency noise on the Simrad EK500 echosounder system.
4. Evaluate performance of the Simrad SM2000 multibeam sonar.
6. Evalutate modifications to the EK500 echosounder.
7. Deploy ARIES and U-Tow samplers to collect plankton in areas of echo-sounder back-scatter. Compare the samples to determine the relative effectiveness of the U-Tow device.
8. Deploy a U-tow sampler fitted with PSM and Aqua monitor units at full ship speed to collect plankton samples within distributed back-scatter layers.
9. Investigate the cause of random failures of the portable Thermosalinography.
10. Evaluate a new fluorometer and chlorophyl filtering system installed in the water sampling lab.
11. Install and evaluate a new environmental sensor interface connected to the Zendiq DAS in the water sampling lab.
12. Establish the towing arrrangements required to attain level trim of the ARIES (nets-only) sampler at different towing speeds.
13. Establish the towing arrangements required to attain level trim of the ARIES sampler at different towing speeds when fitted with a simulated "Behemoth" EK500 echo-sounder.
14. Establish the towing arrangements required to attain level trim of the OCEAN plankton sampler at different speeds when fitted with a new stainless steel OPC.
15. Test a new acoustic link for the multi-cod-end-sampler. The underwater transceiver will be attached to the ARIES sampler to confirm the transmission link; then to a trawl to establish signal quality during standard fishing conditions.
16. Test an altimeter sensor for use on ARIES. The vessel will be required to maintain station over a variety of sea-bed types to confirm signal quality.
17. Monitor the new 3-phase mains and the existing ships supplies to compare levels of electrical noise.
18. Determine the operational life of the new TSK-replacement flowmeter.
