ObjectivesObjectives:
1. To complete biological and geochemical surveys of surficial sediments at sites (140 to 1850m) spanning the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) on the Pakistan margin of the Arabian Sea during a late monsoon to immediate postmonsoon (high productivity) period.
2. To conduct in situ (via benthic lander) and shipboard (in controlled T laboratory) investigations of sedimentary processes and C cycling by benthic communities.
Narrative:
After a successful mobilisation, transit was made to the Pakistan margin work area (with diplomatic clearance in hand) and weather conditions already subdued relative to those experienced during CD150. Work identical to that conducted during CD146 was carried out at the same 5 primary sites (140, 300, 950, 1200 and 1850m) spanning the OMZ (ca. 200-1000m). This involved completion of biological and geochemical surveys commenced on CD150 and as well as in situ and shipboard incubation studies. Full suites of benthic lander deployments (7-8 days) and shipboard incubation experiments were carried out at our 140, 300 and 940m sites, with subsets of these studies also conducted at the 1200 and 1850m sites. The lander work and incubation studies included microelectrode porewater profiling, benthic flux determinations (dissolved gases, nutrients, trace metals, and organic matter), benthic boundary layer water sampling, and tracer incubation studies (13***C-labeled algae and fluorescent particles). Although some problems with the benthic lander were encountered, the programme was generally more successful than during CD146, and the shipboard studies were again highly successful. Additional coring, for biological and geochemical characterisation, was also conducted at sites across the lower and upper boundaries of the OMZ (700-1100m and 140-300m, respectively). These will compliment similar cores collected during CD146, and will permit uniquely detailed assessment of biological and geochemical changes across OMZ boundaries. Finally, because of repeated failure to recover bacterial mats at Indus margin sites, clearance was sought to work in an area further to the north, off Karachi. This was ultimately granted, and a 48-hr period was used to successfully recover megacores with surficial and, apparently, subsurface bacterial mats. These were used for high-resolution sectioning for microbiological and geochemical characterisation and for shipboard incubation studies (benthic flux determinations).
