Objectives | Survey with Arctic Ranger, Harmil, Mary and Rose.
1. To carry out three inshore beam trawl surveys of parts of the Irish Sea and West Wales coasts.
2. To sample juvenile fish and identify sole nursery grounds.
Survey 1: Beam trawl survey of Ribble estuary area between Blackpool and Formby, 4th-6th August.
Survey 2: repeat of 1, 1st-2nd September.
Survey 3: beam trawl stations completed, 1st-3rd October.
Results:
A total of 146 2m beam trawl stations were fished during the first survey, distributed equally between 0-5m, 5-10m and 10-15m. All flatfish were identified, measured and counted, other species were identified and counted. 0-group sole and solenettes were preserved for gut content analysis. Surface salinity and temperature recorded at each station.
During second and third surveys most fishing stations were revisited. 0-group soles collected for electrophoretic studies and frozen. 30 1-group soles returned live to the laboratory for tag-retention rials. |
