Cruise summary report
Cruise Info. | |
Ship name (ship code) | RV Prince Madog (74P2) |
Cruise identifier | PD07/05 |
Cruise period | 2005-03-01 — 2005-03-04 |
Status | Completed |
Port of departure | Menai Bridge, United Kingdom |
Port of return | Menai Bridge, United Kingdom |
Purpose | Research |
Objectives | The objectives are to deploy the Coastal Observatory telemetry and ADCP moorings; to recover moored instrumentation, i.e. STABLE, PMP, Wave Buoy and ADCP frame at the mouth of the River Dee. Also to carry out CTD observations for at least a tidal cycle in the Welsh Channel and the Hilbre Swash, to study turbulence and SPM processes. To carry out a side scan sonar survey of the Hilbre Swash.
In the following narrative all times are UMT The Prince Madog was loaded on the 28/02/2005, mainly tool boxes and light personal things. We set sail at 0640 on the 1/03/2005 to the Hilbre Swash Channel. We arrived at 10:40 and proceeded to service the triaxis wave buoy, which was on board at 11:00. At 11:24 we started two lines of side scan sonar, finishing at 12 :37. We proceeded to anchor to carry out a 25 hour CTD station, but first we got a grab sample at 12:20. The CTD station was started at 13:30 and worked until 12:00 with several casts missed due to strong tidal currents. At 12:05 we lifted anchor and tried to recover PMP, through the Buff, but the PMP frame broke at 12:34. We abandoned efforts to carry out any recovery until tides slaked a bit and at 13:00 we redeployed the Wave buoy. STABLE was recovered at 13:47. We set sail to Vittoria Docks. Got to the lock gates at 17:20 and by the side at 18:00. We unloaded STABLE and loaded the telemetry mooring and ADCP. Set sail at 04:30 to the Hilbre Swash to recover the broken PMP. We got it on board at 08:30 and had to anchor to wait for the tide to be high enough to sail to the Welsh Channel. At 10:30 we set sail and anchored in the Welsh Channel at 13:05, when we started a CTD anchored station until 09:00 on 4/03/2005. We lifted anchor (09:30) and recovered PMP at 09:52. The weather was rough, so we aborted any attempt to retrieve the ADCP at station 12 and set sail to Menai Bridge, arriving at 14:00. |
