Objectives | The combined cruises had two main objectives. JR77 aimed to acquire rock samples
to constrain the history of the mantle beneath the Scotia Sea, from which the oceanic crust was derived by melting. JR78, by contrast, sought to understand the role of the central Scotia Sea in the development of a deep connection between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. A program of bathymetric mapping and rock sampling using a dredge was planned at sixteen sites in five areas. |
