Aim:
To carry out an inshore beam trawl survey of parts of the North Sea, English Channel and Morecambe Bay for juvenile flatfish year class size estimation and collect data on young demersal fish in relation to the environment.

2m wooden beam trawl with 3mm-mesh liner. 10 minute duration tows and distance trawled recorded using GPS.

Team 1: South Coast: Dungeness Bay to Eastbourne; 31st August to 12th September.
Hastings survey: FV St Richard, 3rd-6th September, 4 days fishing
Eastbourne survey: FV Anna Louise; 8th September, 1 day fishing, 12 stations
Folkestone survey: FV Lady Patricia; 11th-12th September, 2 days fishing

Results:
1. 86 valid tows completed successfully. Samples of plaice and sole, 7-26cm collected for ageing.

2. At each station all the fish were identified and measured, shrimp catch was estimated volumetrically and benthic species recored. Observations of temperature, salinity and sediment type also collected.
