| Objectives | 1. To make the annual occupation of the Extended Ellett Line, a hydrographic section from Scotland to Rockall and Iceland.
2. To make measurements of primary production, calcification, dissolved iron, acidification and associated parameters during the spring bloom. 3. To recover four moorings deployed in the Iceland Basin on RRS Discovery 312 and RRS Discovery 321. 4. To recover and redeploy a mooring on the Wyville-Thomson Ridge. 5. To make a CTD survey in the Iceland Basin. The cruise was reduced from the original 18 days to 10 when the vessel's re-fit over ran. Time was further reduced due to engine problems and the cruise started with just 8 days of sea time left. Two and a half days were needed to steam to the working area. About three hours from the winch test site, the forward main propulsion unit started sparking and burning and had to be switched off. It was declared unuseable and the cruise was terminated. The next 4.5 days were spent limping back to port. The ship's navigation, surfmet meteorological and surface (uncalibrated) and 150kHz ADCP instruments were set up to collect data. A calibration of the 150kHz ADCP was attempted. Two pH systems were set up to collect data. No other data were collected. |
