Aims:
1.To carry out the English component to the international young flatfish programme in the North Sea and the eastern English Channel.
2. Preliminary studies of growth and mortality of young sole in the area off Lowestoft and in Rye Bay.

Team 3: Beam trawl survey of the North Thames area 2nd-4th September. Push net sties sampled throughout 5th-26th September.

Results:
1. In total throughout the survey 232 hauls using the standard 2m beam trawl and 62 push net sites using the standard 1.5m push net sites sampled. All fish caught were identified and measured. Salinity, temperature and sediment samples were collected at each station.

2. Lowestoft and Rye Bay. A survey of the distribution and abundace of 0-group sole. Live 0-group sole were collected for laboratory estimation of gastric evacuation (Lowestoft only). Live 0-group sole held in tanks for 24 hours then deep frozen. Samples of 0-group sole were collected for stomach content analysis, a description of the diurnal feeding pattern and for total lipid content analysis. Samples of 0-group sole and plaice collected for morphometric studies.
