FRV Alba Na Mara 1510A
|Ship name (ship code)||FRV Alba Na Mara (74NM)|
|Cruise period||2010-11-05 — 2010-11-16|
|Port of departure||Greenock, United Kingdom|
|Port of return||Fraserburgh, United Kingdom|
1. Collect time series data on scallop abundance in the Lamlash Bay area.
2. Conduct ROV trials within the environs of Lamlash Bay.
3. If ROV trails prove to be successful, we propose to survey shallow areas of the NTZ omitted by previous SNH and MSS surveys.
In September 2008 part of Lamlash Bay, Arran, became a community marine reserve and is now a no take zone (NTZ), the purpose of which is to help protect and enhance biodiversity. In addition to the enhanced biodiversity, there is also an expectation that the no take zone will result in the scallop stocks being enhanced. A baseline survey collected data on the scallop abundance in and around the NTZ in June 2009 was completed by Marine Scotland Science. This survey will collect further data relating to scallop abundance in 2010. Data on other epibenthic species can be generated from the survey images and these will be made available to MS and external organisations such as SNH.
The camera drop frame, TV winch cables, video equipment, and ROV system will be loaded and setup in Greenock. Weather permitting, Alba na Mara will make passage from Greenock to Lamlash Bay on the afternoon of the 5 November after final loading. The rest of the first day will be used to ensure that the crew are familiar with deploying the equipment. The remainder of the cruise will be spent in and around the boundaries of the NTZ - i.e. the NTZ, the remaining area of the bay to the west of the NTZ, and a coast strip of water running directly north to south on the east side of the NTZ. It is expected that during this period both a camera drop survey and an ROV survey will be performed. The vessel will then return to Fraserburgh for unloading on 16 November.
Normal contact will be maintained with the Laboratory.
