| Objectives | CE14003 aims to revisit an area of the Celtic Sea shelf mapped in detail by an Italian research vessel (OGS Explora) under the charge of Dr Daniel Praeg (a science party member of CE14003 also). The study area sits astride the Ireland/UK international border. The cruise aims to investigate the geological history of the area's shallow (Quaternary) geology by collecting a number of shallow (<6m long) vibrocores, for the purposes of palaeoglacial reconstruction (ice sheet modelling).
Ancillary objectives include the collection of surface sediment samples by the Geological Survey of Ireland to assess the nature of geophysical data (multibeam sonar mapping- MBES) responses from varying sediment types possibly present there. This work will be supported by the use of sidescan sonar surveys and repeat MBES mapping. Finally, a team of geochemists from Dublin City University will also use the sediment samples (boxcores) to assess the nature of organic and inorganic materials within the very shallow sediments of the shelf region. If possible, it is hoped to move further seaward from the 2009 survey area and collect new MBES data from other regions of the shelf known to contain the same or similar bedforms seen in the 2009 MBES dataset. |
