Objectives | The PHANTASTIC program comprised two cruises in 2013-14 aiming to unravelling Phaeocystis antarctica adaptive responses in the Antarctic ecosystem. Both cruises were aboard the Research Vessel Nathaniel B.Palmer and complementary research projects focused on:
Bio-assay experiments of iron and light availability to phytoplankton
Phytoplankton pigments and elemental composition
Phytoplankton physiology
Phytoplankton taxonomy by FlowCAM
Trace Metals sampling and measurements in context of GEOTRACES
Genetics of Phaeocystis Antarctica
Small scale physical oceanography
Dimethylsulfide dynamics
Phytoplankton photoinhibition
Cruise NBP-14-09 aboard RV Nathaniel B. Palmer covered five transects from the Long Term Ecosystems Research (LTER) grid of West Antarctic Peninsula region near the Palmer Station. The LTER grid has been occupied every year since 1990, but previous sampling and measurements for trace metals have been done only occasionally. Rob Middag was onboard doing direct shipboard measurements of dissolved Fe as well as multiple sampling activities for samples to be analyzed afterwards in the home laboratory. |
