PurposeResearch
ObjectivesAims

This survey forms the first of two surveys which aim to collect a "before" benthic dataset forming the first monitoring event in a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) study to allow the future evaluation of the effectiveness of proposed fisheries management measures at Swallow Sands (SWSD) MCZ.
This survey will collect multibeam echosounder data to help characterise the extent and distribution of the different habitats within the monitoring areas.

Plan

The RV Cefas Endeavour will depart Lowestoft on Sunday 7th January at 00:40 and transit towards the Swallow Sand MCZ. A full MBES calibration will take place on-route to the MCZ utilising objects of opportunity. Arrival on site is due for early on the 8th with MBES operations immediately starting on Box 1 (the most northerly of the two boxes). Full coverage of 50% of Box 1 will be completed in 1.8 days before beginning MBES surveying of Box 2 with the aim of completing full coverage of 50% of the box by the end of the survey. If the weather conditions deteriorate and the collection of good quality MBES data is no longer possible operations will switch to the collection of sediment samples using the Shipek Grab. Samples will be collected based on a triangular grid pattern across the two survey boxes. Samples will be photographed, described and frozen for particle size analysis.
