PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe cruise was part of the ICES co-ordinated International Herring Larvae Surveys (IHLS) in 2020/21. The aim is to estimate the distribution and abundance of North Sea herring larvae for assessment purposes. The larvae samples are taken on a standard grid with a station to station distance of approx. 10 nm. Gear used is a modified GULF III plankton sampler (Nackthai).
Area of investigation was the southern North Sea and parts of the English Channel. Samples were collected at 65 stations. Two stations had to be skipped because they are currently inside the area of offshore wind farms.
In addition to the larvae programme, nine 2 m beam trawls of the epibenthos fauna were sampled inside Box A in the German Bight.
