PurposeResearch
ObjectivesCruise DY158 is a multidisciplinary effort involving both biological and physical oceanography. The biological component is a continuation of the Polar Ocean Ecosystem Time Series Western Core Box/Scotia sea Open-Ocean Biological laboratoriES (POETS-WCB/SCOOBIES). The main deliverable of the POETS-WCB is to provide a consistent unique time series of mesoscale distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill and an understanding of their physical environment within the region of South Georgia, South Atlantic (1996-current). These data are required to understand the long-term variability in krill biomass at South Georgia and the influences from climatic variability, fishing pressure and predation. The SCOOBIES deliverable focused on studying ocean acidification and carbon flux. The physical oceanography components are part of the Polar Oceans group’s Long-Term Monitoring and Survey activities, currently also forming part of the Biogeochemical processes and ecosystem function in changing polar systems and their global impacts (BIOPOLE) programme, and previously part of Ocean Regulation of Climate by Heat and Carbon Sequestration and Transports (ORCHESTRA) in 2016-2022. Funding for M2, M3, and some instrumentation in Orkney Passage has been provided through NOAA's Climate Program Office's Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division. The main aim of the physical oceanography component is to continue to measure and improve the understanding of Southern Ocean circulation, with specific focus on the mechanisms that transfer heat and carbon across the sea surface and into the ocean. This in turn will support improving climate predictions and simulations.

Polar Ocean Ecosystem Time Series – Western Core Box/ SCOOBIES
Western Core Box – WCB & Eastern Core Box – ECB. This part of the cruise consisted of the following:
1. Acoustic survey during daylight hours using multi-frequency multi-frequency (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 & 333 kHz) Simrad EK80 echosounder. Two transects to be run each day during a four-day period.
2. Deployment of the CTD at minimum of two stations per night during survey.
3. Continuous operation of underway data logging system (bathymetry, location, sea surface temperature, sea currents, etc.).
4. Net sampling (RMT8 and Bongo) at night-time stations plus target fishing during both night and day to ground-truth acoustic data.
5. Acoustic calibration using standard sphere techniques was undertaken in Rosita Bay, a harbour on the North coast of South Georgia.
6. Recovery of WCB & ECB mooring.

SCotia sea Open-Ocean BIological laboratoriES - SCOOBIES
SCOOBIES comprises a mooring along the South Georgia shelf and the open ocean region of the Scotia Sea, as part of monitoring ocean parameters with particular attention to ocean acidification, as well as for measuring the flux of carbon to deep ocean layers. This component of the cruise included:
Mooring recovery, refurbishment and redeployment:
1. Recovery of a deep-water mooring NW of South Georgia. Download data, refurbish and replace batteries.
2. Net sampling (RMT8, Bongo, and Floating Sediment Trap*) over 24-hour periods at mooring stations.
Polar Front survey:
1. Acoustic survey during daylight hours using multi-frequency (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 & 333 kHz) Simrad EK80 echosounder.
2. Deployment of the CTD at one station per 24-hour period during survey.
3. Continuous operation of underway data logging system (bathymetry, location, sea surface temperature, sea currents, etc.).
4. Net sampling RMT8 and Bongo at night-time stations.
*Unsuccessful recoveries of floating sediment trap deployments (2)

Additional biological activities:
1. Deploying 2-3 Bongos (oblique/target hauls) concurrent with CTD casts on some stations on the A23 section and in Orkney Passage.
2. Deploying 1 RMT8 net as part of target fishing near the South Orkney Islands.
