| Objectives | Aims
The survey represented a Cefas and JNCC collaboration funded jointly by Defra programmes MPA, mNCEA (Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment) and a Carbon R&D project (Blue Carbon). The main aims were 1. MPA - Sampling of a 'baseline' benthic fauna and sediment particle size within the Dogger Bank MPA to accelerate building an understanding of the effect that newly-implemented fisheries restrictions have on the site's features. 2. mNCEA (2 principal aims) - Collect comprehensive evidence of the services and benefits provided through marine habitats and species (food provision, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, etc.) and how their condition alters under fishing pressure or release due to fishing restrictions - to optimize the sampling techniques to ensure cost-efficient and high-quality natural capital data gathering of offshore habitats in the future 3. Carbon R&D (3 principal aims) - Improve understanding of carbon processing & provision (C sources (terrestrial, kelp, marine), stock, sequestration (burial) and composition) relating to sediment type, depth, C inputs and biology and their spatial variability across the North Sea - Examine the response of carbon parameters to chronic trawling impact from contrasting gears - Collect data and conduct experiments important for model validation and parameterisation in contrasting shelf regions (including carbon reactivity and vulnerability) Narrative in attached cruise report. |
