PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe aims of the expedition PS133/1 on board Polarstern, is to perform basic research in physical, biological, chemical oceanography and deep-sea geo- and biogeochemistry. The expedition encompasses two projects: 1) "Island Impact" Leg 1: a multidisciplinary project to study and quantify iron inputs and transport from the continental shelves and slope of South Georgia and the impacts on surface productivity and carbon uptake and export, plankton communities, water column and sediment biogeochemistry along the downstream flow of the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. (Island Impact is a larger effort encompassing an additional study – Island Impact Leg 2 (PS133/2) – on iron sources in South Georgia). 2) "South Polar Carbon": will study biogeochemical fluxes and deep-sea biogeochemistry of sediments in bathyal to hadal sites of the South Sandwich Trench system. Taken together both project address important goals defined in the new programme "Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future" in the research field "Earth and Environment" of the Helmholtz Association for Topic 2: "Ocean and Cryosphere in Climate" Topic 4: "Coastal Transition Zones under Natural and Human Pressure" and Topic 6: "Marine and Polar Life: Sustaining Biodiversity, Biotic Interactions and Biogeochemical Functions".
