Ship name (ship code) | RRS Challenger (74CH)
Cruise identifier | CH5/79
Cruise period | 1979-04-10 — 1979-04-23
Status | Completed | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Port of departure | Barry, United Kingdom
Port of return | Barry, United Kingdom
Purpose | Research | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Objectives | 1. To measure the critical physical and biological parameters in the vicinity of the Nymphe Bank, Celtic Sea, during the developing phase of the spring phytoplankton bloom. The vertical and horizontal distribution of temperature, salinity and chlorophyll 'a' would be measured using a 'batfish' profiling system, while the surface distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient concentrations, particle size distribution and chlorophyll 'a' concentration would be sampled continuously from a pumped water supply.
2. To carry out a similar sampling operation on the shelf edge in the vicinity of the Goban Spur to investigate the position and profiles of any shelf edge fronts.
