On the 23/03/1980 ''Explorer'' put into Stornoway and disembarked Dr Hislop, afterwards proceeding with the cruise. The ship was forced to dock at Campbeltown for medical and domestic reasons till the 29/03/1980 where it proceeded to Troon to pick up 2 new officers. After trawling for herring the ship returned to Troon on the 30/03/1980. Explorer then resumed her young fish survey duties.

A number of spawning herring were required to provide fertilized eggs for experiments at Poolwe. The gonads were stripped and transplanted to Poolwe by car from Troon. Other samples were returned to the laboratory by request. The stomachs of dogfish were examined.
