2) An 1.O.S.- Mufax depth metering system attached to a Gulf III sampler was tested
3) Communitcation was maintained with ''Clupea'' ''Scotia'' and ''Anton Dorn'' who were also carrying out larval surveys in the adjacent area at the time
4) The presence of mackerel/herring type marks and distribution were noted

''Explorer'' called briefly at Aberdeen on the 05/09/1980 to take on fuel and disembark a crew member, leaving on the 06/09/1980. Severe weather stopped work and the vessel put into Kirkwell on the 12/09/1980 early for the half-landing which lasted till the 13/09/1980. The ship called briefly into Kirkwell Bay on the 17/09/1980 to collect additional plankton nets from the airport.
