PurposeResearch
Objectives1) To determine the geological structures linking the two islands whose land geology was known in the most detail (Maio and Santiago) This knowledge should provide models for the uplift mechanism which created the islands.

2) To determine the relationship of the volcanic centres to the pre-existing structures of the oceanic crust.

3) To sample seamounts surrounding the island archipelago to place limits on the areal distribution of the distinctive magmatism of the islands.
