PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThis cruise was in 2 parts: 14-20/21 April and 21/22 April - 04 May
1. To undertake grab and corer surveys in selected areas around the Shetland Isles and to the southeast of Fair Isle, to collect seabed sediment samples for physical and chemical analyses at the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen (ML).
2. To undertake trawl surveys in selected areas around the Shetland Isles and to the southeast of Fair Isle, to collect samples of representative species for chemical analysis at ML.
3. To undertake calibration trials using the EM950 swathe bathymetry system.
4. To undertake RoxAnn, swathe bathymetry and side-scan sonar surveys (simultaneous surveys) at a drill cuttings disposal site in the outer Moray Firth (supplemented by ROV underwater television investigations at the centre of the disposal site), to confirm the seabed bathymetry and the nature of the seabed sediments. The surveys will be undertaken prior to the drill cuttings disturbance studies, and repeated at the end of the cruise to assess the level of disturbance caused by repeated trawling operations (see Objective 9).
5. To deploy an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) mooring in the vicinity of the drill cuttings disposal site referred to in Objective 3, to confirm the velocity of tidal flows. The mooring will be deployed prior to the drill cuttings disturbance studies, and recovered at the end of the cruise. Supplementary investigations will be undertaken prior to the disturbance studies, using the vessel-mounted ADCP.
6. To deploy settlement trap moorings at a location downstream (with reference to the flood tide) of the drill cuttings disposal site. The moorings will be deployed prior to the drill cuttings disturbance studies, and recovered at the end of the cruise. The traps will be recovered and re-deployed at regular intervals, both prior to and during the disturbance studies, to collect settlement samples for physical and chemical analyses on FRV Scotia, at ML and at ETS.
7. To undertake a trawl survey in an area adjacent to the drill cuttings disposal site, to collect samples of representative species for chemical analysis at ML. The survey will be undertaken prior to the drill cuttings disturbance studies, to trial underwater television and monitoring equipment attached to the trawl.
8. To undertake near-field and far-field grab surveys in the vicinity of the drill cuttings disposal site, to collect seabed sediment samples for physical and chemical analyses. Near-field and far-field surveys will be undertaken prior to the drill cuttings disturbance studies, and repeated at the end of the cruise. The near-field survey will also be repeated at regular intervals during the disturbance studies. Where appropriate, supplementary core samples will be collected during the initial and final near-field surveys, to confirm the distribution of contaminants within the seabed sediments at the drill cuttings disposal site. All of the seabed sediment samples will be sub-sampled for physical and chemical analyses on FRV Scotia, at ML and at ETS.
9. To deploy samples of seabed sediment incorporating a fluorescent tracer at the centre of the drill cuttings disposal site, to assess the scale and extent of tracer relocation caused by repeated trawling operations (see Objective 10). Frozen samples of labelled sediment will be deployed by hand, whilst the vessel maintains position within the deployment area (using dynamic positioning). Following deployment, selected samples will be inspected using underwater television cameras mounted on the ROV.
10. To undertake repeated trawling operations crossing the drill cuttings disposal site, to disturb and relocate the labelled sediment samples and the underlying seabed sediments and drill cuttings. Underwater television and monitoring equipment will be attached to the trawl to observe the disturbance caused by the trawl ground gear, and to monitor the trawl performance and location.
