PurposeResearch
ObjectivesTo carry out the quarter 3 international groundfish survey of the North Sea, sampling at 75 stations covering the area from latitude 51° 45 N to 61° 30 N. At each station, a 30-minute tow with the GOV bottom trawl, a 200 m drift with a 2 m beam trawl, a deployment of a day grab and a surface and bottom Niskin bottle cast.
The total catch taken in the GOV trawl was weighed and measured by species. Age/length keys will be produced for selected commercially important species. The beam trawl and daygrab samples were taken as part of an EU sponsored project on biodiversity of the epibenthos of the North Sea and its associated substrate. Niskin casts were made for temperature and salinity, and water samples taken for caesium 137 analysis.
