| Objectives | A large number of offshore wind farm developments are proposed in the shallow waters around the coast of the United Kingdom. Many of the proposed areas for development coincide with the occurrence of a significant proportion of the European over-wintering population of the common scoter duck, Melanitta nigra, which is a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. There is environmental concern that the development of wind farms will displace common scoter into less favourable feeding areas or will alter the seabed habitat such that the preferred food of the ducks is no longer available. The prey organisms of scoter duck are largely (80%) reported to be bivalve molluscs that occur in water no deeper than 20m chart datum. This is the third cruise in a series of seasonal surveys of the availability and quality of potential scoter duck prey organisms. The aim is to monitor the distribution and temporal variation of benthic communities with particular focus on bivalve populations in the North-Eastern Irish Sea. The choice of monitoring stations is based on the results of an extensive survey carried out in August 2003, which mapped the distribution of bivalve abundances and biomass throughout the shallow areas (depth<20m) of Liverpool Bay. |
