PurposeResearch
ObjectivesACCLAIM Antarctic Circumpolar Current Levels from Altimetry and Island Measurements is providing real time data from its network of sea level stations in the Southern Ocean as a contribution to the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). The associated research work at POL is an integral part of the many other UK contributions to Core 2, the Southern Ocean component of WOCE. The principal objective is to study variations in the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) on large time and space scales. The ACCLAIM network is also a component of GLOSS (Global Sea Level Observing System).

Specific POL objectives for this leg of the cruise are as follows (refer also to cruise JR19991110):
1) To service the sea level Recorder at Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
2) To recover the CROCUS BPR in the Scotia Sea.
3) To service the sea level recorder at Signy
4) To deploy MYRTLE in the Scotia Sea
5) To service the Sea Level Recorder at Vernadsky (time and ice conditions permitting).

Results:
Serviced Stanley sea level recorder.
Recovered Scotia Sea BPR CROCUS (POL 11) 60° 03.08'S 047° 09.96W, depth 2500m.
Deployed MYRTLE (POL 11) 60° 02.98'S 047° 10.20W, depth 2354m.
Serviced Signy sea level recorder.
Tested the Stanley sea level recorder.

All of the objectives of the cruise were achieved apart from the Inverted Echo Sounder deployment at Drake Passage North and to service the Sea Level Recorder at Vernadsky.
