Cruise period1985-02-04 — 1985-03-09
Port of departurePunta Arenas, Chile
Port of returnGrytviken, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
ObjectivesThe two main aims of the cruise were to study ridge crest-trench collisions in the Scotia and Bellingshausen seas and to investigate he controls on Weddell sea sedimentation. The cruise included a study of the three youngest collision zones off the Antarctic Peninsula and a reconnaissance of the youngest collision zone in the contrasting intra-oceanic environment directly south off the South Sandwich arc.
Objectives for this leg focussed on a study of sediments in the Weddell Sea. Techniques used were 3.5 kHz seismic surveying, box coring and piston coring. Success was limited by bad weather and equipment problems, but samples were obtained. Seismic surveying of the South Orkney block was undertaken when the weather was too bad for coring. Routine XBT deployments for IOS continued throughout this leg of the cruise.
