PurposeResearch
ObjectivesAims:
1. To estimate the population of 0 group/juvenile bass in the R. Medway near Kingsnorth power station.
2. To describe the distribution, short term movements and length distributions of 0 group/juvenile bass in the area.
3. Depending upon the results from 1. and 2., to estimate the daily mortality rate of 0 group bass due to entrainment on the colling-water intake screens at Kingsnorth power station.

Fishing in the Medway commenced aboard the FV Majaro on 30th but adverse weather prevented further fishing so the charter was terminated on 3rd December. Alternative vessel, Osprey, chartered 4th-5th December. Cooling water intake screens at Kingsnorth power station sampled for bass 1st-8th December. Fishing with traps, fyke nets and sweep nets carried out in the warm water outfall lagoon and on the foreshore.

Results:
8 hauls on Majaro using a 2m beam trawl fishing the ebb tide.
250 0-group bass 5-10cm caught. 236 were dye-marked and returned alive to the water.

Fish traps in the outfall lagoon caught 61 bass between 2-8th December. 24 were double dye-marked and released back to the lagoon. 23 were triple dye-marked and seeded into the inlet area of the cooling-water intake screens. 15691 bass - monitoring the entrainment of bass on the colling-water intake screens. 17 marked plus 11 seeded.
