PurposeResearch
ObjectivesTo repeat the biological baseline survey of the Buzzard platform site and adjacent control area carried out in 2004, prior to installation of the platform. This will include:
a) baited time lapse camera deployments
b) sediment samples collected by Van Veen and box core
c) GOV trawl samples
d) A swathe multibeam mapping exercise of the area
e) Sediment samples for chemical analysis and flatfish for biological effects and chemical analysis

A personnel exchange by pilot boat took place outside Fraserburgh habour on the 28/04/2005

Measurements
Biology and fisheries
Demersal fishQuantity: number of deployments = 15
Description: ROBIO deployments shortened and restrcited to periods of slack tide. 6 within the future exclusion zone of the platform, and 4 at the control site. 5 were made once the trawling had begun. Species composition: haddock, whiting, flatfish and hagfish.
Demersal fishQuantity: number of hauls = 7
Description: By the FRS Lander (JULIET) of 30 minutes duration. ROBIO deployments carried out at the same time. Samples were sorted, weighted and either all, or a sub-sample being measured for each species present. Biological data were collected for whiting (131) and haddock (165) and cod (3), and comprised samples taken from dab (180) and plaice (101)
Geology and geophysics
GrabQuantity: number of samples = 26
Description: Sediments. Using a van Veen grab at the site of the platform (5) and at the control site (5). Samples were sieved at 250 microns and preserved in 4% formalin. 16 samples were taken by Day grab from the control site and around the rig site for contaminant analysis. Sediment will be analysed at FRS for organic carbon, particle size, PAH, CB, and brominated flame retardants
Core - soft bottomQuantity: number of deployments = 5
Description: Box cores: 3 at the rig site, 2 at the control site. These were sub-sampled using 100 mm ID push cores which were sliced at pre-determined intervals and preserved in 4% formalin
Multi-beam echosoundingQuantity: number of track lines = 10
Description: 3 nautical miles long. Bathymetry survey
