PurposeResearch
Objectives1. To conduct an acoustic survey to estimate the abundance and distribution of herring in the north western North Sea and north of Scotland between 58° 15'N to 61° 45'N and 4° W to 2° E, excluding Faroese waters.
2. To obtain echosounder trace identification using a pelagic trawl.
3. To obtain samples of herring for biological analysis, including age, length, weight, sex, maturity, ichthyophonus infection and fat content.
4. To obtain hydrographic data for comparison with the horizontal and vertical distribution of herring.
5. To obtain plankton samples for acoustic identification work.
6. To test the new multisampling pelagic cod end.

Data on salinity, temperature, fluorescence, light transmission and optical particle counts were collected

A half landing took place in Lerwick on the 08/07/2005 and there was an exchange or personnel. The vessel resumed surveying on the 09/07/2005.

Description: ARIES vehicle collected hydrographic and integrated whole column plankton data in two PUP nets and specific depth plankton samples
Pelagic fishQuantity: number of hauls = 36
Description: 28 contained herring. 1915 herring were sampled for weight, sex, maturity and otoliths. A subset of these were sampled for fat content
Acoustic reflection on marine organisms.Quantity: data volume in gigabytes = 50
Description: All acoustic data were scrutinised and saved as daily Echoview files. 2 calibrations of the transducers were carried out
