PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe two main aims of the cruise were to study ridge crest-trench collisions in the Scotia and Bellingshausen seas and to investigate the controls on Weddell sea sedimentation. The cruise included a study of the three youngest collision zones off the Antarctic Peninsula and a reconnaissance of the youngest collision zone in the contrasting intra-oceanic environment directly south off the South Sandwich arc.
This leg focussed on a reconnaissance geophysical survey of an intra-oceanic crest-trench collision south of the South Sandwich Islands, with further heatflow measurements, dredges and coring.
The return course form the work area to Montevideo included geophysical surveying of little-known areas of the Scotia Sea up as far as 48N.
XBT drops for IOS continued throughout this leg of the cruise.
