ObjectivesThis cruise studied the area between Walvis Bay and Buenos Aires as part of the WOCE Deep Basin Experiment (DBE). Primary focus was on water mass distribution and spreading within the Brazil Basin. The advection of Antarctic Intermediate Water on its west- and northward paths was investigated in combination with the southward transport of North Atlantic Deep Water and Antarctic Bottom Water. Special attention was given to the overflow phenomenon across the Rio Grande Rise at the Hunter Channel. Direct current observations by moored instruments and drifting buoys near the surface and the 1000 m depth were initiated. Seven previously deployed deep-sea current meter and thermistor chain moorings were recovered. The investigation also included radiative measurements at the sea surface, an environmental chemistry component and sediment sampling in combination with CTD.
