ObjectivesES033 undertook physical oceanographic activities in the northern Weddell Sea (near the South Orkney Islands, and in the southern Weddell Sea, in the general area of Brunt Ice Shelf. Four projects were served by the cruise:

1. Long Term Monitoring and Survey (LTMS) component (British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, University of Bergen (BCCR))
2. SASSI-UK project (University of East Anglia (UEA), BAS and the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS))
3. ACES-FOCAS BAS core project (BAS and University of California, Santa Cruz)
4. IPY project Bi-Polar Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation (BIAC). (University of Bergen)
