Cruise period1980-09-04 — 1980-09-19
StatusCompleted
PurposeResearch
ObjectivesLeg 2 of the "Ferder" drilling and site investigation programme.

Results:
The sea-state and weather were generally poor. Only short boreholes in relatively sheltered locations could be attempted due to poor weather conditions. Three of the six sites were completed successfully with the geological objectives accomplished (80/8, 80/9 and 80/11). One site was attempted four times. One borehole was prematurely abandoned due to the weather before satisfactory length of rockhead core was obtained. (80/12). Two sites had to be abandoned due to the weather before significant results were obtained. Total borehole core recovery between 4.7% (80/10) to 74.3% (80/11) with recovery on individual 5m runs 0-100%. These variations are due to variables including borehole lithology, drilling equipment and parameters, sea-state and driller competence.
