PurposeResearch
ObjectivesACCLAIM Antarctic Circumpolar Current Levels from Altimetry and Island Measurements is providing real time data from its network of sea level stations in the Southern Ocean as a contribution to the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). The associated research work at POL is an integral part of the many other UK contributions to Core 2, the Southern Ocean component of WOCE. The principal objective is to study variations in the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) on large time and space scales. The ACCLAIM network is also a component of GLOSS (Global Sea Level Observing System).

Specific POL objectives for this leg of the cruise are as follows (refer also to cruise JR19991016):
1) To recover two IES/BPRs and one CROCUS in the Drake Passage
2) To re-deploy two IES/BPRs and one CROCUS in the Drake Passage
3) To service the Sea Level Recorder at Rothera
4) To service the Sea Level Recorder at Vernadsky (time and ice conditions permitting).

Results:
Recovery of Drake Passage North IES/BPR (POL 8) 54° 56.56'S 058° 21.41'W, depth 1198m.
Recovery of Drake Passage Centre IES/BPR (POL 9) 58° 22.25'S 056° 21.20W, depth 3776m.
Recovery of Drake Passage South IES/BPR (POL 6) 60° 51.02'S 054° 42.74W.
Deployment of Drake Passage Centre IES/BPR (POL 9) 58° 22.21'S 056° 21.15'W, depth 3862m.
Deployment of Drake Passage South IES/BPR (POL 6) 60° 51.02'S 054° 42.85W, depth 1080m.
Deployment of Drake Passage North Crocus IES/BPR (POL 8) 54° 56.56'S 058° 21.50'W, depth 1203m.
Stanley sea level recorder was serviced at Rothera.

All of the objectives were achieved apart from the Inverted Echo Sounder deployment at Drake Passage North and to service the Sea Level Recorder at Vernadsky.
