Plan

FRV Scotia will leave Aberdeen at 08:00 on 20 April 2009 with the following staff: D Wake, P Copland, E Armstrong, C Hall and B Edelsten. The work to be undertaken by C Hall and B Edelsten will in no way impinge on the initial MBES calibration. P Copland and E Armstrong will provide support to D Wake during the calibration work to be completed in Aberdeen Bay. Providing the trials go as planned, FRV Scotia will return to Aberdeen at 19:30 (or sooner) to exchange staff on 20 April. The compliment of scientific crew for the remainder of the cruise will be 8.

Immediately after the exchange, FRV Scotia will leave Aberdeen Harbour to complete several transects in a suitable site that has 60-70 m depth with a gentle gradient e.g. east of the Aberdeen sea disposal site. On completion of the transects, FRV Scotia will continue to a survey area immediately south of the Isle of May in the outer Firth of Forth. Prior to starting the swathe survey work, a tide gauge will be deployed and recovered after the survey is completed. The survey area is approximately 40 km2 with an average depth of 40m. The time allocated to complete the survey is 22 hours

A second swathe survey area is located approximately 45 minutes west of the Isle of May, centered on Kingston Hudds, south of Largo Bay. The survey area is 20 km2 with an average depth of 25m. The time allocated to complete the survey is 19 hours. A tide gauge will be deployed for the duration of the cruise.

After the tide gauge is collected, FRV Scotia will leave the Firth of Forth and return to Aberdeen Harbour for approximately 08:00 on the 23 of April 2009.
