Description
Summary

The aim of the COASTAL EROSION SURVEY PROGRAM is to assess the short/medium term coastal erosion based on analyses of the littoral environment (wind, waves, currents and sea level) correlated with shoreline changes. Also to evaluate the coastal impact of the existing coastal hydro-technical structures (design, protection efficiency, present state, perspective), to supply of scientific-technical based solutions (immediate-soft engineering coastal protection solution- and medium/long term - hard engineering protection structures) for local/general protection of the shore. The Romanian Back Sea coast is monitoring by the National Institute for Marine Research, Grigore Antipa, every year and this has been done systematically. The measurements are carried out along section perpendicular to the coast (almost 144 transversal sections). The position of the each section is marked by a landmark. These are encountered on the beaches along the entire Black Sea coast from Sulina in the north to Vama Veche in the south. The results of these annual beach measurements are stored in the NIMRD database. With the support of this data it is possible to monitor the fluctuation of the coastline over a period of time. This offers an insight into which sectors are subject to coastal accretion (sand sedimentation) and at which sectors there is coastal retreat (erosion). The NIMRD processes the beach profiles by computers programme to carry out geomorphological analyses and studies. The data are stored, together with benchmark information, as time series at each site with seasonal or annual values. The data are not fully quality controlled. Time series of shoreline position were not corrected with hydro-meteorological events, especially from sea level rise of neighbouring sites. The data set comprises over 102 seasonally and 42 annually values of the shoreline -landmark distance rate / sediment stocks for correspondent transects.
