Description
Summary

The data set comprises marine geophysical data collected on 12 cruises between 1968 and 1981 (Shackleton 1968-69; Endurance 1969-70; Shackleton 1971-72, 1973-74, 1975-76, 1980-81; Bransfield 1974-75, 1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80). These cruises formed part of the University of Birmingham programme of marine geological and geophysical investigation of the Scotia Arc and Weddell Sea region of the Southern Ocean. On all cruises, courses were by gyrocompass and speed by pitot-tube log. Fixes were from transit satellite. Soundings (metres) were extracted from paper chart rolls at 5 minute intervals and corrected for echo-sounder speed changes and for changes in the speed of sound using Matthews' Tables. Total magnetic field at one minute intervals are available from all cruises, either from punched tape output, PDP data logger or digitised potentiometer records. Free air gravity anomaly data in milligals are available, together with details of gravity base station and meter drift.
