Parameters

Sediment lipid concentrations; Concentration of organic matter in sediments; Concentration of proteins in sediment; Concentration of carbohydrates, phenols, alkanols (alcohols), ethers, aldehydes and ketones in sediment

Instruments

Unconsolidated sediment corers; elemental analysers

Description
Summary

The aim of the current project is to assess the level of correlation between organic matter composition in deep sea sediments and benthic fauna population and activity. To this end a number of multicore have been/are being analysed for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, using a molecular approach. Quantitative data are available for individual compounds; these have been quality controlled, indicating a precision of measurement of better than 10 per cent for most individual compounds.
