The 'Progetto Tirreno' was a multidisciplinary study, supported by the regional authorities of Latium Region aiming to define the physical, chemical, biological and geological characteristics of the Tyrrhenian Sea, close to the Latium coasts. Seven cruises were performed by the Department of Physics, to which the 'OCEANO' Group participated by conducting physical oceanographic studies, carrying the following cruises: 1) ANTARES 88, from 24 Feb. to 3 March 1988, 2) ALTAIR 88, from 25 Nov. to 3 Dec. 1988, 3) ARCTURUS 89, from 18 to 24 March 1989, 4) ALDEBARAN 89, from 20 to 24 July 1989, 5) ANDROMEDA 89, from 20 to 25 Sept. 1989 6) BETELGEUSE 90, from 21 to 25 Aug. 1990 7) BOOTES 90, from 21 to 30 Aug. 1990. A grid of hydrographic stations covering the area of interest was programmed and repeated during all the cruises. Vertical profiles of salinity, potential temperature and density were calculated from the measurements of each station. Time series of temperature were also acquired in some stations by maintaining the probe at a constant depth. The data set contains also time series of current velocity obtained during March 1990 at 47 and 94 meters depth.
