Description
Summary

The benthos of the hard bottoms was studied by SCUBA observations along line transects and in situ countings in two areas along the Sicilian coast: the Gulf of Castellamare and the Gulf of Palermo. The island of Favignana was chosen as the reference site. Estimations of density and colonization rates of the physiognomically dominating species were assembled in matrices of data. Topographic profiles were produced which feature the topography and the distribution of these species. Water transparency was measured using a Secchi disk. Photographic material completes the data set. Some of the photographs were taken in an area where mucilage was observed.
