The data are collected to establish current levels and possible trends of contamination in samples from the marine environment (water, sediments and biota). Samples arise from monitoring studies, including the UK National Monitoring Programme (1993 onwards), research projects and toxicological investigations. Sediment data include particle size and organic carbon levels.
