Description
Summary

Every three years, there is an internationally coordinated mackerel/horse mackerel egg survey covering the Atlantic Ocean from Southern Portugal to the west of Scotland (A). The Netherlands monitors and samples the region from the Gulf of Biscay to the Celtic Sea - depending on ship time and ship availability. Each year after the international Atlantic survey, thus also every three years, there is a mackerel egg survey in the North Sea (B). It is carried out by the Netherlands and Norway. The main tasks during these egg surveys are sampling and counting mackerel and horse mackerel eggs as well as sampling mature females to determine their age and fecundity.
