Description
Summary

RMN - Rete Mareografica Nazionale - The Italian National Tide Gauge Network is managed by the National Maritime Service (Servizio Mareografico Nazionale) of the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA). It replaces the pre-existing sea-level monitoring network operated by the Ministry of Public Works. For all the stations, the hydrometric level is monitored with a new microwave level sensor (radar) with millimetre accuracy. Each level sensor is referenced by connecting to the nearest landmark IGM. All stations are equipped with a wind sensor (speed and direction of the wind at 10 metres), with a barometric sensor, an air temperature sensor, and a water temperature sensor, in addition to a relative humidity sensor. Furthermore, 10 stations are equipped with a multiparameter probe for the assessment of water quality. The measured parameters are: water temperature, pH, conductivity and redox. All stations are equipped with a local system for managing and storing data and a transmission device (UMTS) in real time to the central office of the SMN in Rome. In addition, 9 strategic stations for the measurement of particular phenomena (anomalous waves) are equipped with a second data transmission system, via satellite with IRIDIUM technology, ensuring connection even in the event of a black-out of the UMTS system.
