Weather observations are made at 3-hourly intervals commencing at 0900 hours GMT (UTC) until 2400 hours. The observations are entered into a book Metform 2613 entitled 'Register of Coded Meteorological Data' and then the readings are transferred to the computer for onward transmission to Aviemore. The data are collected by the Duty Harbour Master simply observing the weather conditions with the wind speed and direction being estimated and are, therefore, subject to individual objectity. However, the Duty Meteorological Supervisor at Aviemore questions, by telephone, any suspected readings, thereby forming a level of quality control. There are occasions when observations are missed due to the Duty Harbour Master being involved in other duties around the port. The information provided consists of 3-hourly weather reports forwarded to the Aviemore weather centre via computer tereminal. In addition, manual records are also maintained and consist of: wind speed and direction; coded past and present weather; visibility; coded cloud cover and amount. Manual records are held in the Harbour Office for up to approximately 12 months, whereafter they are forwarded to the Met. Office Archives at Bracknell.
